On Friday 3rd June, St Mary Of The Angels Primary School in Notting ~Hill held their hilarious Book character Day on which the children come to school dressed as a character from their favourite book. I photographed the parade for charity and thanks to all the generous parents, we raised over £400 (with a few uncollected orders still outstanding). The teachers were also willing (or perhaps even eager) to join the festivities with the cast of Alice In Wonderland well-represented. Mr Soyka looked extremely fetching as Popeye and Mrs Connolly become Mrs Wishy -Washy for a day. These are my favourite photographs from the pageant, although I would like to point out that I judge each photograph purely on its merits as an image and not on the quality of the costume, the intellectual merit of the book or indeed, the radiant sweetness of the child.
GARTER DAY 2011
TALES from PARADISE with OLIVER HARRIS, ERIC ALLISON, RAINBOW ROWELL, ONLY CONNECT and IAN LESLIE
Went to a new speaking event called Tales from Paradise last night (19th May) upstairs at Paradise by Way of Kensal Green. The theme was ‘crime and deception’ and the whole thing was compered by a comedian, Neil Wates, who got the audience warmed up with some jury-based, Beyoncé-inspired banter. It kicked off with a young author – Oli Harris reading bits of his new crime novel THE HOLLOW MAN, and how he researched the main character – a down-and-out detective trying to skip town. Then Neil introduced the next speaker, ex-criminal Eric Allison who recounted his time in prison, and the last big bank job he did! Third on the bill was Rainbow Rowell, over all the way from Nebraska to talk about deception in life and love, and read a hilarious bit from her new book ATTACHMENTS with her brother onstage as well playing a very convincing female role! The room was packed, tables in the front, people wedged in the sides and back to the bar! After a quick break for top-ups, we were launched into the second half – a talk by an ex-offender who was helped by the amazing charity Only Connect – and their unique rehabilitation programme. The last of the night was Ian Leslie who did ‘how to spot a liar’ using chunks from his book BORN LIARS, and the deceptions in everyday life. Everyone laughed, drank, and went away with a head full of interesting ideas. Looking forward to the next one in September – apparently there’s a kinky theme on the horizon…
